How To: Caring for your Christmas Plants
December is a time for celebration, spending time with family, and beautiful Christmas plants!
Some of our Christmas favorites are the Poinsettia and Christmas Cactus.
We’ve come up with the 4 most important tips for each type of plant to help you keep your
Poinsettia and/or Christmas Cactus happy during the Christmas season!
Poinsettia
It is important to keep your Poinsettia in a room that has lots of natural light. Make sure that is not placed in direct sunlight, as this can damage the leaves.
Water your Poinsettia regularly, but do not let it sit in water. Remove any excess water that remains in the pot after 10 minutes.
Don’t be too concerned if your plant begins to drop yellow leaves. This is common once a Poinsettia is moved into a new environment.
Poinsettias have gotten a bad wrap for being poisonous for pets, yet the extent and severity of poisoning is very exaggerated. Signs of poisoning involve mild skin irritation and indigestion. Ingesting any type of houseplant, including a Poinsettia, can cause mild stomach irritation. Therefore, you can enjoy a Poinsettia even if you do have animals! If you’re still worried about them possibly ingesting the plant, place it out of reach of your pet!
Christmas Cactus
The Christmas Cactus can adapt to low light conditions, but the blooms will be more vibrant if you place your cactus in natural light. Make sure not to place the Christmas Cactus in direct sunlight, as this can burn the delicate leaves.
Water your Christmas Cactus often, waiting for the soil to dry between watering intervals.Be sure not to let the plant sit in water, as this can lead to rot.
Christmas Cacti like to be planted in a snug pot. If you plan on repotting, make sure to do so when the plant is not in bloom.
Prune your Christmas Cactus by lightly pinching and twisting off the bud! This will encourage further blooms to grow.
In Conclusion
We hope you find these tips helpful and if you have any further questions about Christmas plant maintenance, we would be more than happy to help!
Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday season,
