What’s Hot in 2020: Your Guide to New Annual Varieties!

Every year gardeners look forward to viewing the new plants for the upcoming spring season. Spring 2020 will not disappoint! While some of the varieties below are brand new to the gardening world, others are brand new to Floral Acres!

 

Cabaret Good Night Kiss Calibrachoa

Million Bells Goodnight Kiss is an outstanding long bloomer with bright pink edges, trailing into a dark raspberry, yellow starred center.  Bloom time is from June to September.  It is a low maintenance plant, loving a sunny location and is self-cleaning.  It will reach a height of 6-10 in. and a spread of 10-12 in.  Use in planters,window boxes and hanging baskets.

OrangeTastic Calibrachoa

Another self-cleaning outstanding new Million Bells variety from Ball Seed!The added attraction is that this long blooming plant has semi-double blooms of golden apricot with orange highlight rings. Heat and drought tolerant, the masses of blooms attract hummingbirds and other pollinators.  Use in hanging baskets, planters and window boxes. Height: 8-12 in. Spread: 12-15 in.

Petunia Midnight Gold (Burpee)

A guaranteed hit this spring 2020 will be yet again – another petunia!  Petunia Midnight Gold (Burpee) produces incredible amounts of royal purple double blooms with gold edges.  The royal purple is nearly black and gives a Victorian garden feel to hanging baskets and large containers.  This is a very vigorous petunia, excelling in a full sun location.   Height: 8-10 in.Spread: 20-26 in.

Petunia Crazytunia Spider Girl (Westhoff)

With a definite “crazy” pattern the Petunia Crazytunia Spider Girl (Westhoff) will be a hit with gardeners all over Canada. The central purple spider pattern is placed on white, creamy colored blooms.  Blooms from summer to fall and can be used in flower beds, containers and hanging baskets.  A sunny location is best and soil must be kept moist but not soggy.  This heat–loving, deer resistant petunia measures 10-12 in. in height with a spread of 10-12 in.

Impatiens Roller Coaster Hot Pink

From the talented plant breeders at Dummen comes a new series of New Guinea Impatiens.  The first in this series is Roller Coaster Hot Pink.  The flowers area vibrant shade of hot pink with ruffled edges. This is a part sun to shade plant and is deer and rabbit resistant.  It requires a moist soil and a flowering plant fertilizer application every two weeks to look its best.  Upright in habit it reaches a height of 12-18 in.  If you want an eye-catching shady flower bed display this is the plant for you!
