It’s that time of year where we find ourselves in the middle of winter longing for our colourful spring gardens. To get us through the next few months before the arrival of spring, considering low light office friendly plants is a great option!
There are many benefits of office plants that include increased creativity and productivity in the workplace. It is important to remember that although plants with beautiful blooms would be ideal during winter, the plants that thrive the best in a low light office environment are those without blooms. Blooming plants require more sunlight, so if you have an area that has a window, these plants would do best placed there.
Indoor office plants require low light, less water, and have lower maintenance needs. The most common mistake when caring for low-light plants is over watering. Make sure that your indoor plant does not sit in a saucer of water; the water that remains five minutes after watering should be removed from the saucer. With these tips in mind, here are our 3 favourite indoor low-light office plants!
The ZZ Plant
The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia) does best in low light conditions, making it the perfect plant for an office! These plants are often mistaken for fake because of the shiny, wax like coating that covers the plant. The ZZ plant does best in areas where it will receive small amounts of fluorescent light. Curling leaves and yellow discolouration is an indication that your ZZ plant is getting too much light. ZZ plants do best with less water and should only be watered is when the soil has dried out.
The Rex Begonia
If you’re looking to add a bit of colour to your office space, the painted-leaf or fancy-leaf Begonia is a great choice!Because the Rex Begonia is not known for blooms, it does well under fluorescent light!
Direct misting can cause mold and over-watering can damage the plant. Therefore, water the Rex Begonia when the soil feels dry but do not wait until it is completely dried out. Once you figure out how to properly balance watering your Rex Begonia, they can add the perfect pop of colour to your indoor space!
The Snake Plant
Snake Plants (Sansevieria) have been shown to remove the toxins from the air,making them the perfect indoor office plant! The easiest way to care for a Snake Plant is to only water it once the soil has completely dried out. It is hard to underwater this plant. There are a variety of colours of Snake Plants where the stiff upright leaves have gray, silver, or gold edges!
