The 'Autumn Magic' black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa 'Autumn Magic') is a popular, low-maintenance deciduous shrub known for its multi-season visual interest, extreme hardiness, and adaptability. It features attractive white spring flowers, glossy green summer foliage, abundant black berries, and a spectacular red and purple fall color display. Year-round interest: This cultivar provides ornamental value throughout the year, with showy white flowers in spring, deep green glossy leaves in summer, brilliant fall foliage, and persistent black berries in winter. Adaptable & Hardy: It is highly adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, from wet, boggy areas to dry soils once established, and is very resistant to pests, diseases, and urban pollution. It thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-8. Foliage: The leaves are a dark, glossy green during the summer and "ignite" into brilliant shades of scarlet-red, orange, and purple in the fall. Flowers: Fragrant clusters of small, white, five-petaled flowers appear in mid-to-late spring, which attract pollinators. Fruit: Large, blueberry-sized dark purple-black berries appear in late summer and persist through winter, offering a beautiful contrast to the fall and winter landscape. The berries are edible but very astringent raw; they are often used for jams, jellies, and juice. Attribute Description Light - Full sun to partial shade; best fruit and fall color in full sun. Soil - Highly adaptable; tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay, sand, moist, or even boggy soils. Water - Medium moisture requirements, but becomes drought-tolerant once established. Maintenance - Low-maintenance; prune in late winter to remove dead branches or control suckering if a contained shape is desired.
