Orchids are not like traditional potted plants. They are epiphytes which means that they do not grow in dirt, but rather by hanging on to the bark of trees. But don't worry, orchid care isn't difficult, just different. These beautiful plants can bloom for months each year and live indefinitely! They can make excellent house plants.

Care

General Maintenance: As a gift plant the roots are often packed with moss. This stabilizes the plant in the pot but does not let the roots breathe as they should. If possible, carefully remove some of the moss so the roots are not suffocating. Make sure the pot has very good drainage so water can run straight through the moss. Do not let them sit in water for extended periods of time. Many people put their Phalaenopsis orchid pot in a larger ceramic pot with pebbles in the bottom. Any excess drainage water collected provides extra humidity for the plant.

Temperature: They will do best in 10 to 27 degrees Celsius.

Light: While these plants do love a lot of bright, indirect light, be sure to avoid exposing your orchid to more than 1 hour of direct light a day. They are best placed in an east or west facing window. Pale leaves with brown patches indicate excessive light. Dark green leaves indicate insufficient light.

Watering: Lukewarm water (not softened or distilled) is best. Once a week during colder seasons, and twice a week during warmer seasons is good for orchids. The size of your container will also affect how often you need to water.

Soil: Orchids need fresh potting mix every year or so, as they need proper air circulation.
