Schizachyrium scoparium, commonly known as little bluestem or beard grass, is a species of North American prairie grass native to most of the contiguous United States as well as a small area north of the Canada–US border and northern Mexico. Hardiness Zones: The plant's ability to thrive in different climates is indicated by its USDA hardiness zone range of 3-9. Growth Habit: It forms a clump-like, upright growth habit with fine-textured, slender, arching leaves. Size: Typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet (60-120 cm) and can spread about 1.5 to 2 feet wide (45-60 cm). Foliage: In spring and summer, the foliage is a silvery blue with hints of pink, transitioning to a beautiful purple-bronze color in the fall. Ecological Benefits: Little bluestem provides food, shelter, and nesting material for wildlife, attracting birds and pollinators. Maintenance: It's relatively low-maintenance, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. Toxicity: It is not known to be toxic to humans or pets. Deer and Rabbit Resistance: Generally resistant to deer and rabbits. Invasiveness: Not considered invasive.
