The Juniperus horizontalis 'Prince of Wales' is one of the most popular and resilient evergreen groundcovers for the Canadian Prairies
Foliage: Features dense, bright green, scale-like needles during the growing season. In late fall and winter, the foliage shifts to a distinct plum or purplish-bronze hue, adding seasonal interest when most other plants are dormant.
Size & Form: Extremely low and ground-hugging, reaching only 15 cm (6 inches) tall but spreading broadly up to 1.5–2.5 metres (5–8 feet). It forms a thick, weed-suppressing carpet.
Hardiness: Exceptionally cold-tolerant, rated for Zone 2. It is a native selection found in the wild across Western Canada.
Tolerances: Excellent for erosion control on slopes. It is highly resistant to salt (good for curbsides), drought, and urban pollution.
Light: Requires full sun for the densest growth and best winter colour.
Water: Low to average moisture needs once established. It is sensitive to "wet feet," so well-drained soil is a must.
Maintenance: Virtually maintenance-free. No pruning is required unless you need to contain its spread at a border.
Soil: Thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils where other plants struggle.
