The 'Ure' pear (Pyrus 'Ure') is an exceptionally cold-hardy and fire-blight resistant pear tree, developed for the Canadian prairies, that produces sweet, juicy fruit ideal for fresh eating and canning.
Fruit Flavor & Texture: Produces small, 2-inch, chartreuse-yellow pears with sweet, tender, and juicy white flesh. The flavour has a crisp texture suitable for eating fresh off the tree.
Harvest Time: The fruit ripens in mid-to-late August or September and should be picked just before full ripeness to preserve texture. The pears do not store for long (around one week) but are excellent for preserves and canning.
Hardiness: Extremely cold-hardy, rated for Canadian Hardiness Zone 2 or 3, making it one of the most reliable fruiting pears for prairie climates.
Growth Habit: A fast-growing tree with a rounded form, typically reaching about 25 feet tall and wide at maturity, although some sources note it can reach 35 feet.
Disease Resistance: It is highly resistant to fire blight, a common and serious pear tree disease.
Pollination: 'Ure' is self-sterile and requires a different variety of pear or an Ussurian Pear seedling nearby for cross-pollination to produce fruit. Good pollinators include 'Golden Spice' or 'Early Gold'.
Light: Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct light daily) for optimal fruit production and tree health.
Soil: Does best in average to evenly moist conditions but will not tolerate standing water. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types and is highly tolerant of urban pollution.
Maintenance: It is a high-maintenance plant that requires regular care, including pruning in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed.
