Creeping growth: Unlike many vining philodendrons, P. peltatum is a terrestrial creeper. Its stems grow horizontally along the ground, with thick roots developing from underneath and new leaves emerging on top. This gives the plant a grounded, rather than trailing, presence.
Mature leaves: The foliage can grow quite large, developing prominent, thick veins and a lush green color. Under the right lighting, the leaves may take on a subtle, metallic sheen.
Mature size: In its natural habitat, this plant can reach up to three feet in height. However, it is an ideal size for apartments, offices, and smaller indoor spaces.
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. While the plant can tolerate lower light, its growth may be slower. Avoid direct sun, which can burn the foliage.
Water: Water when the top 50–75% of the soil has dried out. Drooping leaves can be a sign of both over- and underwatering, so it's important to check the soil moisture before watering. Soggy soil can lead to root rot.
Soil: Use a well-draining, rich, organic potting mix. Some excellent ingredients include peat moss, coco coir, perlite, or sphagnum moss.
Fertilizer: Fertilize every 1–2 months with a gentle, organic fertilizer, particularly during the growing season in spring and summer. Growth may slow during winter.
