Asclepias syriaca, commonly called common milkweed, butterfly flower, silkweed, silky swallow-wort, and Virginia silkweed, is a species of flowering plant. It is native to southern Canada and much of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, excluding the drier parts of the prairies. Hardiness Zones: Common milkweed is considered hardy in zones 3-10b. Climate Tolerance: It's highly cold-hardy, tolerating frost and snow, and also drought-resistant once established. Most milkweed species prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Some species, like swamp milkweed, can tolerate saturated conditions. Milkweed can be planted in the ground or containers. Common milkweed attracts multitudes of pollinators. Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) typically grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet (90-150 cm), but can sometimes reach up to 8 feet (240 cm).
