The Bloomerang® Dark Purple Dwarf Lilac (Syringa x 'SMSJBP7') is a highly resilient, reblooming shrub specifically valued for its deep violet flowers and compact growth habit, making it an excellent fit for smaller landscape spaces.
Reblooming Habit: This variety provides a massive burst of fragrant, deep purple blooms in late spring, then rests briefly before reblooming from mid-summer until the first frost.
Mature Size: It remains manageable, typically maturing to 3–4 feet tall and wide (dwarf form) or up to 4–6 feet depending on specific cultivar management.
Hardiness: Well-suited for Canadian climates, it is hardy in USDA Zones 3–7, tolerating temperatures as low as -40°C.
Disease Resistance: Highly resistant to powdery mildew and leaf spot, which often plague older lilac varieties
Light: Needs full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight) for the best rebloom performance.
Soil: Requires well-drained soil. It is not particular about pH but cannot tolerate "wet feet" or standing water.
Pruning: Only prune immediately after the spring bloom if shaping is desired. Do not prune in fall, winter, or early spring, as this will remove the developing flower buds.
Watering: Young shrubs should be watered deeply once a week. Established plants are relatively drought-tolerant once the root system is firm.
