The 'Flame' Amur Maple (Acer ginnala 'Flame') is a popular and exceptionally cold-hardy small deciduous tree or large shrub known for its reliable and spectacular scarlet-red fall color.
Appearance: It can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub or trained into a small, rounded tree form, reaching a mature height and spread of 15 to 20 feet (5–7 m).
Foliage & Fall Color: The dark green, lobed leaves remain glossy throughout the summer and turn outstanding shades of fiery red, orange, and sometimes yellow in the fall.
Flowers & Fruit: Fragrant, yellowish flowers appear in early spring, followed by abundant, showy scarlet-red samaras (winged seeds) in late summer that provide additional ornamental interest.
Hardiness: It is among the hardiest maples, rated for USDA Hardiness Zones 2 or 3 to 8, making it a reliable choice for the Canadian prairies.
Sunlight: Best performance and most vibrant fall colors are achieved in full sun, though it can tolerate partial shade.
Soil: Highly adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, including clay, sand, moist, or dry soils, and is not particular about soil pH. Good drainage is recommended.
Maintenance: It is a low-maintenance tree with high tolerance for urban pollution. Pruning should be done only in summer after the leaves have fully developed, as it may "bleed" sap if pruned in late winter or early spring.
