The 'Matcha Ball' false spirea (Sorbaria sorbifolia 'Levgreen') is a compact, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub praised for its unique, rounded shape and fine-textured, fern-like foliage that changes color throughout the seasons. It is an extremely cold-hardy (Zone 2 or 3) and low-maintenance option for Canadian gardens. Foliage: The main attraction, its leaves, emerge a bright coppery-orange in spring, mature to a fresh, deep green with bronze tips in summer, and turn outstanding shades of yellow in the fall. Form & Size: It grows in a very tidy, naturally rounded form, typically reaching a compact height of 2–3 feet and a spread of 3–4 feet. This self-shaping habit means minimal pruning is required to maintain its ball shape. Flowers & Fruit: This variety is noted for sparsely blooming, with limited, inconspicuous creamy-white flowers, which helps it maintain its dense, round form throughout the growing season. Hardiness: Rated for USDA Hardiness Zones 2 or 3, making it very resilient in the harsh Canadian climate. Maintenance: It's a vigorous, low-maintenance plant that is tolerant of urban pollution and has few pest or disease issues. Gardeners should be aware of its potential for suckering. Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun is recommended for the best foliage color and density. Soil & Water: Prefers average to moist conditions and should not be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. Pruning: Best pruned in late winter to early spring to remove any dead wood or manage the size, though its natural shape requires little intervention
