The Medinilla Myriantha, commonly known as the Malaysian Orchid, is not a true orchid at all. These plants are considered semi-epiphytes which give them similar growing patterns to that of orchids, which are true epiphytes. The Malaysian Orchid has large, handsome green foliage with clusters of pale pink to deep rose flowers. They also produce small, purple, inedible berries that add interest throughout the year.
Height: 2ft - 4ft
Spread: 2ft - 3ft
Light: Bright Indirect
Water: High Humidity, Moderate Water
Zone: 10 - 11
Pet Safe: Non-Toxic
Temperature: 17°C to 25°C is ideal. Do not expose to frost or freezing conditions as that can easily cause these plants to perish. They can be taken outside during the summer within the ideal temperature range.
Light: The plants require bright indirect light. In the wild they grow in dappled shade underneath the canopy of trees and other large plants. They can be brought outside in the shade during the hot season.
Watering: These plants love high humidity, and will only produce flowers and berries when that need is met. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, and water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom of the pot. Do not overwater as the roots may rot. Mist often or use a pebble tray to increase humidity and encourage flowering.
Soil: These plants love a loose, well draining soil with a good amount of aeration. It is recommended to add 30-40% orchid mix to a regular potting soil to prevent compaction of soil.
Fertilizer: Fertilize monthly with a flower-based, high-phosphorus fertilizer during the growing season (April to August).
