Rhipsalis trigona, often sold under the misspelling Rhipsalis trangona, is a much-branched epiphytic cactus known for its segmented, pendulous, and often twisted stems that are triangular in cross-section. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, this unique succulent is an excellent, low-maintenance houseplant that thrives in hanging baskets.
Stems: The long, cascading stems consist of plump, vibrant green segments. Each segment has three distinct ribs and is typically slender and jointed.
Flowers and fruits: The plant can produce small, delicate white to pale pink or yellowish flowers, particularly in spring and summer. These are sometimes followed by small, globose, berry-like fruits that can be white or pale pink.
Growth habit: As an epiphyte, it naturally grows on trees in its rainforest habitat, giving it a trailing and cascading form. This makes it ideal for hanging displays.
Common names: Besides the incorrect "trangona" spelling, it is also known as the Mistletoe Cactus or Three-Angled Mistletoe Cactus.
